Abstract:
How can leaders and followers from a variety of religious backgrounds negotiate their diverse commitments in the workplace? This paper proposes a constructive approach to organizational leadership called respectful pluralism. The paper traces the reality of an increased and increasing diversity of religions in the United States and considers how religion in a post-Christendom society creates new challenges and benefits for the workplace. The framework of respectful pluralism provides an alternative to either a generic spirituality approach or a Christian establishment approach. The paper considers examples in which the perspective of respectful pluralism might help leaders and employees proactively to resolve tensions based upon religiously based difference. As a whole, respectful pluralism enables significant expression of religious beliefs and actions by employees while avoiding situations of the degradation or coercion of coworkers. - Ronald, Emily, "Ford Interfaith Network (2005)" http://www.pluralism.org/research/profiles/display.php?profile=74143
