Harvey Bernard Milk (May 22, 1930 - November 27,1978) was an American politician and gay rights activist, and the first openly gay city supervisor of San Francisco, California.

He was, according to Time magazine, "the first openly gay man elected to any substantial political office in the history of the planet." As the self-described "Mayor of Castro Street" he was active during a time of substantial change in San Francisco politics and increasing visibility of gay and lesbian people in American society. He was assassinated in 1978, along with Mayor George Moscone, by then recently-resigned city supervisor Dan White, whose relatively mild sentence for the murders led to the White Night Riots and eventually the abolition of diminished capacity defense in California.

    Full color 12.5" x 17" poster

Though the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, it had minimal immediate effect on most slaves' day-to-day lives, particularly in Texas, which was almost entirely under Confederate control. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. That day has since become known as Juneteenth, a name derived from a combination of the words June and nineteenth.
