In 2007, there were 5 states where American Indians and Alaska Natives were the largest race or ethnic minority group. These states are Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

As of July 1, 2007, the estimated population of American Indians and Alaska Natives was 4.5 million, which made up 1.5 percent of the total population.

It is projected that by July 1, 2050, the American Indian and Alaska Native population will rise to 8.6 million and comprise 2 percent of the total population.

In 2007, there were 537,500 American Indian and Alaskan Native families. 314, 900 of these were married-couple families, including those with children. 146, 400 were married couples with their own children, under the age of 18.

56 percent of American Indian and Alaska Native households owned their own home in 2007.

In a survey conducted in 2007, 27 percent of American Indians and Alaska Natives who were 5 and older, spoke a language other than English at home.

In this same survey, 76 percent of American Indians and Alaska Natives 25 and older had at least a high school diploma. 13 percent had at least a bachelor's degree.
