Statistics of the Month - May
Which group of women is the fastest growing in the U.S. labor force?
Asian women are one of the fastest growing groups of women in the U.S. labor force. Their total employment increased 46 percent - from 3.6 million in 1990 to 5.3 million in 2000 and is projected to increase another 42 percent to 7.5 million by 2010.
From 1990 to 2007, the nation's Asian buying power is estimated to quadruple from $117.6 billion in 1990 to $459.9 billion in 2007. This rate of growth is substantially greater than the increases in buying power projected for whites (112 percent) and is second only to the projection for Hispanics.
About 35% of Asians live in California, 10% in New York, and 6% in Texas. These three states account for more than half of the Asian population.
