Statistics of the Month - January Whites, Latinos and Blacks Life Satisfaction Whites, Latinos Share Similar Views on Assimilation Fifty-two percent of whites and 53 percent of Latinos believe people of color should blend into American culture, according to a 2004 poll by the Gallup Organization, while 35 percent of each group believes people of color should maintain their own culture. Almost half of black respondents (48 percent) agreed that it is better for the United States if people of color blend into American culture, while 40 percent feel people of color should maintain their own culture. Blacks, Latinos Less Satisfied With Conditions in the United States A majority of blacks (83 percent) say they are dissatisfied with conditions in general in the United States, while only 15 percent are "satisfied with the way things are going" in the nation, according to an August 2004 Gallup Poll. This satisfaction figure is down from 37 percent in 2001. Approximately a third (35 percent) of Latinos are "satisfied with the way things are going" in the nation, dropping from a majority (53 percent) in 2001. Latinos' displeasure with the current state of the nation rose from 44 percent in 2001 to 60 percent this year. Fifty-one percent of whites are satisfied with the state of the nation, while 47 percent are dissatisfied, down from 54 percent in 2001. Source: 2005 Diversity Inc. Blacks, Latinos Less Satisfied With Their Lives Than Whites Only 37 percent of blacks said they were "very satisfied" with their lives as a whole, compared with 42 percent of Latinos and 55 percent of whites in the United States in 2003, according to a poll by the Gallup Organization. A large number of blacks were "somewhat satisfied," bringing their total satisfaction level up to 82 percent, but even this is lower than whites' total satisfaction, which registers 92 percent. Only 17 percent of blacks said they were dissatisfied with their lives, similar to the 14 percent of Latinos who say this, but double the rate seen among whites (8 percent).
